BACKGROUND

Richard read English at the University of Cambridge and subsequently qualified as a teacher in 1975 from the University of Reading.

He has 25 years' school experience, having been a teacher, Head of English and manager in a number of UK comprehensive schools between 1975 and 2000. Throughout this time, he taught the full secondary age range, from 11 to 19, including coaching students for Oxbridge entrance. For eight years he ran all of the examinations in a large comprehensive school, including internal exams, Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS Level, A Level, BTech., City & Guilds, NVQ and GNVQ. He is an experienced adult education teacher and has provided private tuition to many students. He currently offers tuition to students aged 11+ in English, English Literature, Study Skills and Examination Skills.

For many years during the period 1975 to 2000, Richard was also an examiner and moderator with the SEG/AQA. He represented East Sussex on the SEG English Panel, advising local teachers, contributing to the vetting, marking and analysis of national examinations and often chairing national Awards meetings for the SEG/AQA.

He became his school representative and a local committee member for the Association of Teachers & Lecturers, and was local Secretary-Elect when he left teaching.

From 2000 to 2011, he was Education Officer with Cambridgeshire County Council, where, for ten years, he led the Anti-Bullying Strategy and Cambridgeshire's Schools Complaints Procedure.

Throughout his time with the Local Authority, Richard specialised in mediation, conciliation and in advising parents/carers and schools on complaints and other issues. He has vast experience in investigation, mediation and conflict resolution, staff training, governor training, Child Protection matters, school governance and in headteacher/governor support. He has been both a primary and secondary school governor.

For ten years, he was secretary to Cambridgeshire's Primary Heads' Forum.

Another major aspect of Richard's work in Cambridgeshire was supporting schools in critical incidents. He led the in-school support throughout the Soham tragedy and has much experience of other school emergencies, including sickness, fire, flooding, serious personnel issues, sudden death and suicide. He also advised schools on matters of security and conducted security reviews.

For many years Richard has been writing about the Cold War, developing and producing video programmes and displays for museums and other organisations, and giving dramatic multimedia talks and seminars on many varied Cold War and World War II topics. His presentations have numbered over 60 at the famous annual War and Peace Show and he has given many more to museums, special interest groups and other organisations, such as Rotary clubs, history societies, English Heritage and the University of the Third Age.

He offers presentations across the UK mainland, and has a large number of ready programmes available. He can often 'fill in' with these at short notice for speakers who have had to drop out of an event.

Apart from these presentations, Richard is able to prepare dramatic programmes on virtually any World War II or Cold War topic, and will develop material for most kinds of audiences, from age ten to degree level.

A major collaboration with Bongo LLP led to the publication of a web-based teaching resource on the Cuban Missile Crisis for use in US schools.

Now living on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk/Lincolnshire border, he is an independent consultant offering a range of professional media and education services.
